What Camper Propane Tank Sizes Are There?

Prepare for your upcoming trip with Medway Oil & Propane

propane tank Plainville, MACamping is a hobby and pastime that is beloved by many here in Eastern Massachusetts. But before you hit the road and head out on your next camping excursion, it’s important to double-check your packing list. If you are preparing to take your camper or RV out on the open road, don’t forget a portable propane tank. It will certainly come in handy on your trip.

The Different Propane Tank Sizes for Campers

When it comes to propane tanks for campers and RVs, there are a variety of sizes.

Campers that are on the smaller end usually use removable propane cylinders. These are regulated by the Department of Transportation and are usually called DOT tanks. The most common sizes for these types of tanks are 20 pounds, 33 pounds and 40 pounds.

Since a DOT propane tank is small, it can’t hold as much fuel, which means that it will run out of fuel much faster than a larger tank. However, replacing or refilling these tanks is simple and fast. You can just detach an empty DOT tank and swap it out for a full one or take it to a fuel provider and get it refilled.

Larger campers and RVs will need a larger propane tank, and these usually cannot be removed. These vehicles use what are called ASME propane tanks, which have construction and safety standards set by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. ASME tanks typically range in size from 20 to 100 pounds, and they usually get mounted on the outside of a vehicle. You will need to take them to a propane refill station to be refilled.

What Can a Propane Tank Be Used for in a Camper or RV?

Propane is incredibly versatile. Therefore, it has many different applications on campers or in RVs. This includes powering space heaters, water heaters, grills and other cooking equipment.
