Cost Comparison: Diesel vs. Electric Vehicles

If your vehicle needs diesel fuel come to Medway Oil & Propane

Once upon a time the cars, trucks and buses that we saw driving on the roads were fueled by either standard gasoline or diesel fuel. But our world is expanding and changing and the kinds of vehicles that we drive are ever evolving.

By now, you are probably very familiar with — and have probably seen and even driven in — plenty of electric vehicles (EVs for short). Thanks to the fact that more and more people are becoming “greener” and more environmentally conscious, these types of vehicles have become quite popular — and for good reason.

Electric vehicles don’t produce any emissions, which is a huge plus for our outdoor air quality. This also means that they help reduce our carbon footprint. They offer a driver faster acceleration, are energy-efficient and typically require less maintenance.

But how do the costs of electric vehicles compare to the costs of vehicles that are powered by diesel fuel? Medway Oil & Propane can help you answer this question.

Comparing Costs of Diesel Fuel and Electric Vehicles

• Driving an electric vehicle can save you money in the long run. Typically, these types of vehicles are less expensive to maintain than their counterparts since they have fewer moving parts and don’t need oil changes. Additionally, the fact that they are so energy-efficient helps reduce costs. However, the upfront costs of an electric vehicle are usually higher than the upfront costs of a vehicle powered with diesel fuel.
• Since electricity is cheaper than diesel fuel, electric vehicles tend to be less expensive to fuel than gasoline and diesel fuel engines.
• There are now federal and local tax incentives for purchasing and driving an electric vehicle, depending on your state.

The Fluctuating Price of Diesel Fuel

One thing that you have to keep in mind when comparing the price of diesel fuel to an alternative energy source is the fact that its price goes up and down quite frequently. The cost of diesel fuel is impacted by multiple different factors, including:

• How accessible the fuel is: If diesel fuel is hard to come by it will be pricier. When there is a surplus of fuel, prices will tend to be lower.
• Associated expenses: If it suddenly costs more to produce, transport, store and distribute diesel fuel, the fuel itself will become more expensive as well.
• Taxes: Taxes can differ from state to state, so if you live in an area with higher taxes your diesel fuel will be directly impacted.
• Supply and demand: When the demand and the need for diesel fuel are high, prices will increase. When the need and demand slow down, prices will drop.
