The amount of heating oil that is used a year varies from household to household. However, we are able to estimate how much heating oil a home can anticipate using.

Residents who live in the northeast in a fairly standard size house (think approximately 2,500 square feet) can estimate that they will use about 880 gallons of heating oil a year.

There are two good ways to look into how much heating oil you can estimate using a year:

• Look at your prior heating bills and heating oil orders.
• If those kind of records aren’t available or if you have just moved into your home and haven’t spent a winter there yet, ask a neighbor who has a similar size house how much heating oil they typically use a year.

Factors that influence the amount of heating oil you use

The amount of heating oil that a home uses is affected by a few different elements. They include:

• The temperature of your house: Homes that run naturally cold will have to use more heating oil to get warm.
• Your home’s heating system itself: Furnaces and boilers that aren’t in great condition or are on the older side are going to have to work harder to warm a home and working harder, in this case, means using more heating oil. You can make sure that your heating system is working efficiently with professional annual maintenance and servicing.
• How well insulated your home is: Houses that don’t have great insulation feel and are colder than well-insulated houses. So if your insulation is not great you can expect to use more heat and more heating oil.
• A home’s size: The general rule of thumb is that larger homes require more heat to get warm and therefore require more heating oil.
