Propane Delivery Tips for Homeowners: Maximizing Efficiency

Properly prepare when it comes to propane

Using propane can make a homeowner’s life easier in a lot of ways. Thanks to its versatility and the fact that it can be used for so many different things (home heating, warming water, igniting non-wood burning fireplaces, powering grills and cooking ranges) it can almost be considered a one-stop-shop and it is certainly a smart fuel choice.

Following the below tips and suggestions from Medway Oil & Propane can help you be even smarter and more strategic when it comes to your propane usage and fuel deliveries.

Preparing for a propane delivery

Your fuel supplier should be the one doing most of the legwork when it comes to your propane deliveries. This holds even more true for customers who enroll in Medway Oil & Propane’s automatic delivery option or opt into our wireless propane tank monitoring service! However, there are certainly things homeowners can do to help their fuel deliveries go as smoothly as possible, which will help ensure that they always have the propane they need on hand.

• Clear the path that leads to your tank: You want the path that leads to your propane tank to be clear of debris, branches, outdoor furniture and snow.
• Make sure your home number is visible: Double check to make sure that your house number can be clearly read from the street.
• Take your pets inside: As a safety precaution, keep your pets inside (or at least in a different location that is secured) when you are expecting a fuel delivery.
• Make your tank stand out: If you have an underground tank, mark its location with a flag or something similar. This will keep it visible in the event of a snowstorm.
• Keep your gates unlocked: If you are not going to be home at the time of your propane delivery, be sure you unlock your gates before you head out. The last thing you want is a delivery person at your house who doesn’t have access to your home.

When to order your next propane delivery

A propane tank should never actually be filled to the 100% mark. In fact, a propane tank is considered full at the 80% point. This is a safety precaution and gives the fuel the room it needs to expand, which will happen as its temperature increases.

Therefore, you should contact your provider (unless you’re signed up for an automatic delivery service) when the gauge on your tank hits 30%. This should allow plenty of time to arrange your next delivery without having to stress about running out of fuel entirely. This is the smartest way to go about ordering fuel if you are a will-call customer.

What you need to know about your propane usage

Understanding your propane usage will help you be smart and strategic about your fuel orders and fuel supply.

Refer to old bills and delivery receipts to get a sense of how much propane you usually go through over a specific amount of time. This information will give you a pretty solid jumping off point on which you can base your future orders.

By estimating your future propane usage you can potentially avoid spending money on fuel you may not actually need, which is a huge win for any homeowner.
