What Is The Temperature Of A Propane Flame?

How hot it actually gets

propane Attleboro, MAWe all know that a flame is hot. This will come as no surprise to anyone and is something pretty much of all of us learn at a very young age. It is one of life’s very basic lessons. However, you may be surprised to learn just how hot flames actually are, particularly how hot a propane flame is.

The burning temperature of propane

Propane burns at a temperature of 3,560 degrees Fahrenheit. This is actually the same temperature that a natural gas flame burns at.

While propane and natural gas burn at the same exact temperature, their resulting combustion products are fairly different. This is part of what contributes to making propane such an efficient fuel. In fact, one cubic foot of propane gas produces approximately 2,520 British Thermal Units (BTUs) of heat per cubic foot while natural gas only produces about 1,012 BTUs of heat per cubic foot.

To put this simply, you need a larger amount of natural gas to complete a task than you do if you are using propane.

A propane flame’s color

Now that we know a bit about how hot a propane flame can get, let’s talk about a propane flame’s color.

We often associate flames with the color orange. However, you actually want to see a different color flame when it comes to propane.

Ideally, you want a propane flame to be blue. This blue color indicates complete combustion, which means that you are safely and efficiently burning propane at its maximum temperature while also minimizing waste simultaneously. In fact, an orange or yellow flame coming from your propane burner indicates that things aren’t working as efficiently as they could. It can also signify that there is an inadequate amount of oxygen, which is a potential safety hazard. This can actually lead to dangerously high levels of carbon monoxide in your home. A discolored propane flame can easily occur when food spills on a propane cooking range or debris is obstructing a burner. This is partially why regularly cleaning and maintaining your propane cooking ranges is highly recommended.
