What Color Is Diesel Fuel?

Facts about Diesel Fuel

Your knowledge of diesel fuel may be solely limited to knowing that it is used to power vehicles and specific kinds of equipment. While that fact certainly is true, there is so much more to know about diesel fuel.

Therefore, Medway Oil & Propane has put together the below information for our readers to get to know diesel fuel on a more expansive level.

All About Diesel Fuel

The first thing to know is that there are actually two different types of diesel fuel: on-road diesel fuel and off-road diesel fuel.

• On-road diesel fuel is what trucks, trailers, and other types of vehicles that drive on an actual road, street, or highway use. One can usually access this type of diesel fuel at his or her local gas station. On-road diesel fuel is not made with any dye, which makes it clear in color. In fact, it is even sometimes referred to as clear diesel fuel.
• Off-road diesel fuel is mostly only used to power tractors, earthmovers, standard construction vehicles, and backup power generators. A red dye is added to off-road diesel fuel to make it distinguishable so that people don’t put it in the wrong type of engine.

Diesel fuel is used by all sorts of different businesses such as the welding industry, construction companies, the agricultural industry, landscaping companies, the manufacturing industry, and pavers. Backup power generators that are powered by diesel fuel can commonly be found in hospitals, health-care facilities, nursing homes, rehab centers, schools, and assisted-living facilities.

Machinery and engines that are powered with diesel fuel typically last longer than they would if they were powered by traditional gasoline since they burn at a lower temperature. A diesel fuel-powered engine also requires less maintenance over time, and they are quieter than gas engines.
