Six Signs Your Propane Tank Needs Replacement

Things to be on the lookout for

propane tank Acton, MAWhen it comes to propane, there is virtually no expiration date. In fact, the fuel will last pretty much forever! However, the same cannot be said for a propane tank.

While propane tanks can last a long time (typically, they will last anywhere from about 20 to 30 years as long as they are properly maintained), they will eventually need to be replaced.

No homeowner or business owner who relies on propane wants to wake up one day to find that his or her propane tank should have been replaced yesterday. Fortunately, this doesn’t have to be the case as long as you know what signs to be on the lookout for.

How to know when you should replace your propane tank

You should be thinking about replacing your propane tank if it has reached the 20 to 30 year mark. You may also need to replace your tank if you notice any of these six signs and signals:

  1. Higher utility bills: If you are suddenly spending more money on your utility bills than what you are used to it may be time for a propane tank replacement. This can indicate that your propane-powered appliances aren’t working as effectively and efficiently as they could be, which sometimes happens with an outdated and old propane tank.
  2. A burner flame that is discolored: Your burner flame should be blue, but if you are suddenly noticing that it is yellow or orange your propane tank might not be in the best shape.
  3. Inaccurate fuel levels: A propane tank that is new and in its prime should be able to provide accurate readings of your fuel levels.
  4. Physical damage: Consider replacing your propane tank if you are noticing visible rust, dents, discoloration or cracks.
  5. Propane leaks: A leaking tank (which will smell like rotten eggs) is an indication that it could be time for a propane tank replacement.
  6. An unreliable pilot light: A boiler or furnace pilot light that constantly goes out can be a sign that your propane tank is not working right.
