What size propane tank do I need?

Propane tanks are not one size fits all. Our propane experts will go over such factors as how you use propane in your home, whether you use it for heating, the size of your home, and whether you plan to add more propane appliances in the future.

Here is some basic information about common propane tank sizes to give you an idea of what you may need:

100-lb. tank

• 4 feet tall by 18 inches in diameter
• Holds nearly 25 gallons when filled
• For one propane appliance, like a fireplace or a space heater

2x 100-lb. tank setup

• Two 100-lb. tanks are connected via a switchover valve
• When one tank runs out, the valve automatically switches to the full one
• A red/green indicator tells you when to replace the first tank
• For one or two propane appliances, like a range or a dryer

420-lb. tank

• 4 feet tall by 3 feet in diameter
• Holds approximately 100 gallons of propane
• For water heaters, whole-house backup generators, and pool and spa heaters

500-gallon tank

• 5 feet tall by 10 feet long
• Holds 400 gallons at 80% capacity, which is the standard fill to allow for expansion of the liquid propane
• Can be installed aboveground or underground
• The size needed for whole-house heating and for homes that have several propane appliances

1,000-gallon tank

• 5 feet tall by 16 feet long
• Holds 800 gallons at 80% capacity (standard fill)
• Aboveground and underground installation available
• For very large homes and commercial/industrial applications
